課程概述

氣候診斷分析目的在於了解氣候變異特性與機制。本課程介紹如何利用物理與動力觀念、統計方法與數值模擬,分析與診斷氣候變異,探討可能的影響機制。本課程重點為實作經驗,學生將分組,選定研究題目(如:聖嬰現象、北極振盪、特定氣候極斷事件、季內振盪、亞州季風等),研讀相關論文,了解現象,分析資料與(或)進行數值模擬。對選定之氣候現象進行完整與系統性的探討。
課程將分為三大部份主題(季風,自然震盪,人為氣候變遷), 每一主題的第一週教師將介紹相關背景知識,接下來三週由各組作進度報告,教師指導研究進度,最後一週由教師帶領討論作總結。各組於學期末繳交一份完整報告。

The objective of climate diagnostics is to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of climate variability. This course will introduce how to analyze and diagnose climate variability using physical and dynamical concepts, statistical methods, energy and water budget analysis, standard diagnostic packages, and numerical simulations, with the discussion on potential controlling mechanisms.
The course will be divided into three sections (as listed below). For each topic, the instructors will give a brief overview. The following three to four weeks will be presentations by student groups. All topics will be summarized by discussions lead by instructors.
The main focus of this course is to provide the students “hands-on” experiences. The students will be grouped and they will select a topic as a group term project (such as El Niño, the Arctic Oscillation, climate change, Intraseasonal Oscillation, and monsoon). By studying relevant journal papers, understanding the phenomenon, analyzing data and/or carrying out numerical simulations, they will conduct a thorough and systematic investigation on the selected climate phenomenon. The instructors will advise the group term projects, and each group will be required to turn in a completed term paper by the end of the semester.
